November 20-24, 2023

National Book Week plays a crucial role in fostering a culture of reading and appreciation for literature in society, benefiting individuals and communities by expanding knowledge, stimulating creativity, and promoting cultural diversity. This annual celebration of the written word is a testament to the enduring power of books and the joy of reading.

The KIRN Director, Dr. Rosalinda Tanguilan opened the ceremony with a warm welcome to all attendees, expressing enthusiasm for the month dedicated to Library and Information Science. In her opening remarks, the Director emphasized the importance of libraries as hubs of learning, research, and community engagement. She highlighted the pivotal role that librarians and information professionals play in connecting people with information, fostering a culture of curiosity, and supporting lifelong learning. The Director's inspiring words set the stage for a series of engaging activities planned for the LIS Month.

St. Paul University Philippines Knowledge and Information Resource Network (SPUP-KIRN) came alive with a burst of creativity as students gathered for the opening program of the 89th National Book Week with the theme: Read. Reread. Relive. This event, aimed at celebrating the world of literature and information, commenced with a flourish on a bright morning on November 20, 2023, at the Knowledge Development Center.

The day started with a delightful “Poetry Writing Contest," which set the stage for an exciting month ahead. Enthusiastic participants from four (4) different departments (SBAHM: Sjenica Enqriquez, SNAHS: Bon Angelo Cabauatan, SITE: Maria Riana Janell Ting, and SASTE: Robin Gabriela Banatao) penned their thoughts and emotions into verses that resonated with the theme of the month: "Read. Reread. Relive." The library was transformed into a realm of inspiration, with pages filled with rhyme and rhythm, showcasing the magic of words.

In a moment of anticipation and celebration, Mr. Bon Angelo Cabauatan of the SNAHS Department emerged victorious in the iteration of the contest. His poetic prowess and ability to weave words into a tapestry of emotions captivated the judge and left an indelible mark on the literary landscape. The winning poem not only showcases the talent within the department but also serves as a testament to the power of artistic expression in fostering a sense of community and shared appreciation for the written word.

The second activity, “NAME THE NOTEWORTHY,” stands out as a captivating and educational activity designed to engage participants in a delightful exploration of iconic individuals and significant historical events.

Participants in this activity embark on a journey of discovery as they put their knowledge to the test, identifying and recalling key figures who have left an indelible mark on history, as well as crucial events that have shaped the course of time. The activity provides an excellent platform for participants to showcase their breadth of knowledge, fostering a sense of camaraderie and friendly competition.

Gloria Ilarde and Zey Balisi (SBAHM); Xevi Olivas and Jhon Danver C. Abogado (SITE); Ronnie Ballad and Denise Aquino (SASTE); and Renie Remudaro and Elyka Meryl Bruno (SNAHS) immerse themselves in the challenge and discover the joy of learning through a dynamic and interactive experience. The carefully curated questions prompt reflection on the importance of these noteworthy figures and events, sparking conversations and connections among participants.

At the end of the competition, the participant or team with the highest score will be crowned the winner. In this instance, the prestigious title goes to Mr. Ronnie Ballad & Ms. Denise Aquino of SASTE Department. Their remarkable knowledge and quick thinking have set them apart, making them the champions of "Name the Noteworthy."

On the fourth day of the National Book Week, the KIRN Scavenger Hunt is a captivating and interactive activity designed to inspire participants to delve into the wealth of resources offered by the library. This engaging pursuit is crafted to not only test participants' research skills but also to foster a deeper understanding of the vast collections available within the library's walls.

By embarking on this quest, participants are not only challenged to locate specific items, information, or clues but are also encouraged to navigate the library's terrain, fostering familiarity with its layout and resources.

Participants (Ariel Aquino & Kristina Tallud – SBAHM); (Nicole Evangelista & Krystel Lingat – SITE); (Mariam Sedano & Micah Bartolome – SASTE); (Alex Sagario & Charilyn Parcon – SNAHS) engage in the KIRN Scavenger Hunt armed with a predetermined list, set of riddles, or clues that guide their exploration. These prompts direct them to various sections of the library, where they must unearth hidden gems of knowledge. The activity is designed to be dynamic, requiring a combination of critical thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork to successfully complete the challenge

In the spirit of friendly competition, Nicole Evangelista & Krystel Lingat of SITE Department emerged victorious in the KIRN Scavenger Hunt. The department not only showcased their prowess in research and resourcefulness but also demonstrated the importance of teamwork in conquering intellectual challenges.

Marking the end of an exhilarating day, it was time for the most-awaited part: the "Awarding of the Winners." Participants who had excelled in the Poetry Writing Contest, "Name the Noteworthy Activity," Paulinian Wizards Activity, and the Scavenger Hunt were recognized for their outstanding contributions. Prizes and certificates were distributed, and the library resounded with applause and cheers for the talented individuals who had made LIS Month truly special.
